Timeless Elegance: Transforming Homes and Increasing Resale Value with a Classically Traditional Black and White Kitchen

This is another case of why we design for the client, their personal taste, and ignore being too trendy… its all about loving where you live, and never looking dated. This traditional kitchen with a sleek edge was originally designed for the client, but greatly increased the resale value 5 years later when the clients were ready to upgrade.

Here are some key elements that likely contributed to the increased resale value:

1.     Timeless Design Choices:

The decision to go with a high contrast black and white color scheme made the space classically timeless. This ensured that the kitchen remained appealing and didn't quickly go out of style, making it attractive to a broad range of potential buyers.

2.     Custom White Cabinets:

The handcrafted white cabinets, created by a master millworker, not only set the tone for a bright space but also added a level of craftsmanship and quality that added a lot of value.

3.     Collectables Display for the Everyday:

The beautiful white Italian pottery dishware was especially loved by our Client; so we kept it front in center in glass cabinets. To add a bit of texture, we selected “seed glass” which had little tiny bubbles in it that give a more artisan feel. The corner cabinet was specifically designed to illuminate the Client’s black Hungarian crystal. Lighting up this display really gave a focal point and anchor to the kitchen, and the “seed”s caught the light perfectly for just a little sparkle.

4.     High Contrast with Galaxy Black Granite:

Breaking up the all-white look with Galaxy Black granite counters added visual interest and prevented the kitchen from feeling sterile. This high contrast also contributed to a sleek and modern edge while maintaining the classic traditional feel.

5.     Functional and Durable Materials:

The choice of through-body porcelain tile for the flooring, which is both durable and has minimal grout lines, ensured a practical and long-lasting solution. The emphasis on durability is also a smart move for a kitchen with extensive commercial-grade cookware; so any heavy drops that created chips would be undetectable.

6.     GE Monogram Series Appliances:

Investing in high-quality appliances, such as the GE Monogram series with multiple burners, a griddle, and two ovens, adds both functionality and a touch of luxury to the kitchen. This is particularly appealing to homebuyers who appreciate a well-equipped, chef grade kitchen.

7.     Spatially Efficient Design:

Opting for drawers instead of cabinets and incorporating pull-out pantries demonstrates a thoughtful approach to spatial efficiency, making the kitchen more accessible and user-friendly. This is especially important for those with limited reach and adds practical value to the space.

8.     Warming Shelf and Concealed Lamps:

The inclusion of a warming shelf with concealed lamps in the hood adds a luxurious touch and ensures that dishes are served at the right temperature. This attention to detail enhances the overall functionality of the kitchen.

9.     Impactful Storage Solutions:

The two ample-sized pull-out pantries, despite the absence of a walk-in pantry, showcase a smart and impactful storage solution. This kind of attention to storage needs, especially in older homes with limited built-in support spaces, can significantly enhance the usability of the kitchen.

Alyson really loved working on this project when PALM + PINE was still a mere side hustle, as she was still working at commercial architectural firms. She thoroughly enjoyed this particular project as a creative outlet. The joy and enthusiasm expressed by her, really highlight the importance of personal passion and her careful attention to detail in design.

“It was a fantastic creative outlet. At that time I was doing a lot of space planning and test fits for our VIP clients, and as much as I love that part of the project, and problem solving; it was so fun to break it up with material selections and just play around with the palette”.

In the end the client felt the space felt carefully curated and well thought out. The combination of timeless design, high-quality materials, functional layout, and attention to detail contributed to creating a kitchen that not only satisfied the client's preferences but also increased the resale value of the property.
