1 Easy Trick Interior Design Professionals Use to Select Artwork Sizes

Something almost every client asks me is how to select artwork... I get it, it's totally overwhelming. There are literally millions of pieces to select from online printers, big box stores, custom print houses, or of course my favorite option: real works from an art gallery. Palm + Pine specializes in Luxury Vacation Home design so our focus is on that market clientele's needs, however this one rule can be applied by anyone for any project. Most important, and most confusing for people is getting the right size for the "picture perfect" piece 😉.

So how big (or small) should the work be? Well that's defined by the ancient Greek's "Golden Ratio". Whatever surface is anchoring below your artwork (IE a console table, changing table, crib, or bed, etc.) you want to shoot for the overall artwork including matting and frame to be between 1/2 and 2/3 the length. Its really that simple.

Check our handy dandy table below. Remember that the Golden Ratio is a goal and its perfectly fine to +/- a few inches.
